• Alternate

An arrangement where leaves are attached to the stem singly at different heights, with only one leaf per node.

  • Biennial

A biennial plant is a flowering plant that, generally in a temperate climate, takes two years to complete its biological life cycle.

  • Bract

A bract is a modified or specialized leaf, associated with a reproductive structure such as a flower, inflorescence axis or cone scale.

  • Branched

Divided into multiple subdivisions or limbs growing out from a main stem or axis.

  • Branched venation

A leaf venation pattern where veins form a net-like network (reticulum).

  • Capitulum

A pseudanthium is an inflorescence that resembles a flower. The word is sometimes used for other structures that are neither a true flower nor a true inflorescence.

  • Catkin

A catkin or ament is a slim, cylindrical flower cluster

  • Compound

A compound leaf consists of several leaflets connected to a common petiole.

  • Corymb

Corymb is an inflorescence with the flowers growing in such a fashion that the outermost are borne on longer pedicels than the inner, bringing all flowers up to a common level.

  • Deciduous

Shrubs that shed their leaves annually at the end of the growing season.

  • Divided

A leaf whose blade is deeply divided into several segments or sections (ex: Oak).

  • Inflorescence

An inflorescence is a group or cluster of flowers arranged on a plant’s stem that is composed of a main branch or a system of branches. The types of inflorescences are available here.

  • Inner bark

The inner bark is the second layer of the trunk. It transports the elaborated sap.

  • Leaflet

Each of the leaflike structures that together make up a compound leaf.

  • Lenticel

One of many raised pores in the stem of a woody plant that allows gas exchange between the atmosphere and the internal tissues.

  • Parallel venation

A leaf venation pattern where veins run parallel to each other from the base to the tip of the leaf without forming a network.

  • Petiole

The stalk that attaches the leaf blade (lamina) to the stem. It supports the leaf.

  • Rhizome

Underground stem that produces roots and above-ground shoots.

  • Shrub

A small woody plant, usually less than 5m tall, with multiple stems arising from the base instead of a single trunk.

  • Stamen

The stamen is a part consisting of the male reproductive organs of a flower.

  • Tannin

Natural plant compounds that provide a bitter taste and an astringent feel (dry mouth sensation). See usage.

  • Thermophilic

    Likes heat.

  • Umbel

An umbel is an inflorescence that consists of a number of short flower stalks (called pedicels) that spread from a common point, somewhat like umbrella ribs.

  • Woody

    Woody plant.
